How not to get ripped off by Russian taxi drivers
Four ways to get a taxi
Dear travelers! Below we do not consider the method of ordering a taxi at special desk at the airport or hotel reception. Of course, this is an excellent and reliable way to get transportation, especially if you are visiting Russia for the first time.

However, do not forget that a taxi may be required not only from the airport, and not every Russian hotel has an English-speaking staff. We will help you to live in Russia as if you were a local.

Hi! We are 99% sure that in your country you use a mobile app to call a taxi. In Russia, you can do this as easily and simply as at home. Already have Uber installed? Fine! Then you can already order a taxicab in Moscow and St. Petersburg without our tips.

However, we strongly recommend downloading and using the Russian equivalent of the Uber app - YandexGo. The fact is that your normal Uber has a global map with a limited address base in Russia. Therefore, using the usual app, you can call a taxi, for example, from the airport to a famous hotel or to the main streets of the city. However, other locations will be inaccessible in most cases.

In our travel guide, for any transport terminal or landmarks of each city, in addition to instructions on how to get there by public transport, we will provide a link to the YandexGo
By clicking this link, your device will open the application immediately (if installed), indicating this point as the destination or departure of your choice.

WE:
YandexGo (or YandexTaxi) is the largest and most well-known aggregator of licensed taxi carriers in Russia and in the countries of the former USSR. In 2018, Yandex and the Russian division of Uber created a joint company and combined the software on one platform.

Now, even if you make an order with the Uber app, then in 7 cases out of 10 you will get a car with the YandexGo logo. And vice versa.
Uber & YandexGo are completely legal in Russia and provides services of only licensed taxi drivers.
You can also call an YandexGo / Uber taxi at website or by phone.

How else to order a ride from the airport, train station or to tourist attraction without knowing Russian? You have three options:
1) Learn Russian before the trip
2) Read this article
3) Or simply book a private transfer or shared shuttle!

The advantages of this type of transportation are - no stress and no problems with language, price is known in advance, the car will be waiting for you in the right place at the right time. And if you ordered a private transfer, then your personal driver will be expecting you, holding a banner with your name.

Our choice and recommendation is KIWITAXI. This is the best company in Russia providing shuttle services. By the way, reservation a ride with KiwiTaxi is available in almost any country. Remember this on your next trip!

You can order a transfer with any service level - incl transfer for the family with children, economy minivan for a tourist group or a luxury transfer. The cost is fixed at the time of pre-order and never rises - either when the driver is waiting for the passenger, when the stop is necessary, or because of traffic jams.
Book transfer from airport Moscow, St Petersburg. Shuttle for individuals and groups to train station and tourist attraction in Russia
By default, Moscow Domodedovo DME Airport and Central District of Moscow are listed as the points of departure and destination. Replace the data / direction in the form, if necessary. Specify address of your location / your hotel name / etc.
If the booking system cannot find your exact address, then first type the name of the city district where you want to start or end your ride (how to find out the name of the district). In this case enter the exact address of departure / arrival in the second step of booking.

In our travel guide, for any transport terminal or landmarks of each city, in addition to instructions on how to get there by public transport and taxi, we will provide a link to the KIWITAXI transfer service.

BOOK A RIDE CORRECTLY!
Why is it sometimes necessary to indicate not the exact address, but the name of the area?

The point is that a private transfer service is not a taxi. Therefore, the company's server contains the address base of only the largest and most popular objects among potential passengers. But this does not mean that you cannot order a transfer exactly where you want.

So, enter the starting and ending points of your route. Replace the data or direction in the form above, if necessary. First, try to specify exact address of your location / your hotel name. And if the booking system cannot find your place, then specify in the form the name of the area/district of the town as the point of departure or arrival. And the exact address of departure / arrival, in this case, enter on the second step of booking.

If you are not sure or don't know, then this is not a problem! Just find this point on the map, copy the coordinates (in this option, that is, latitude and longitude, for example - 55.415875, 37.899344) and paste into the booking form. The system itself will understand which area you are looking for. Or do it like this

  • What is the best taxi company in Russia?
There are many large and small carriers in Russian cities. However, almost all of these companies operate on the platform of one of the aggregators. The largest and most famous brand is YandexGo / Uber
Note! Uber (YandexGo) is a completely legal company in Russia, providing services of only official carriers in all major cities.
  • What other taxi companies are there? I want to be able to choose
In Russia there are many large and small carriers, as well as cabmans who own just one taxi car. However, in almost all cities, almost 100 percent of taxi drivers have a YandexGo account. Thus, it makes no sense to look for a carrier company or driver on your own - it is much easier and cheaper to make an order through the YandexGo app.

Only in very small towns you will not be able to use this service. In this case, you will need the phone number of the local taxi carrier and the knowledge of a couple of phrases in Russian

Note. In Russian province, in most cases, taxi drivers accept orders only by phone, payment only in cash.
  • Is the trip price fair? How not to get ripped off?
In Russia all taxicab companies use fixed tariffs. Therefore, you will know the price before the trip. Here are approximate for economy class (VW Polo, Skoda Rapid and similar):
Short and medium distances ride usually cost around 5-10 USD. The cost of travel on the same route may differ depending on the time of day and demand. But! A journey to any airport from the center of Moscow should not exceed $ 50, in St Petersburg $ 30. Payment in Russian rubles (₽) in equivalent.

If you do not use a mobile app or website and order a taxi by phone or catch a car on the street, ask the operator or driver about the price before pick-up. Please, anytime remember our warnings
  • In what currency should I pay for the trip? Cards or cash? What bank cards are accepted for payment in Russia?
In Russia, any payments are accepted only in Russian rubles (₽). If someone asks to pay in USD, EUR etc, it is illegal and is a sign that a swindler in front of you.

Take your Visa and MasterCard cards in any currency with you to Russia. Other payment systems are not accepted everywhere in Russia. Some prices may be shown in USD or EUR for reference (for example, for a private airport transfer). But, if you pay on the territory of Russia, then the payment will be provide in RUR, and next your bank will convert this transaction into the currency in which your card is issued.

If you do not use the mobile app for ordering a taxi, then you will need cash. Well, we even always recommend that you always have some amount of cash with you. How to exchange currency and withdraw money from an ATM without fee read here
  • How to catch a car on the street or call a taxi by phone without knowing the Russian language?
It is quite possible that you are in a place where mobile apps don`t work, or your phone runs out of battery. How to tell the operator where you are or say driver where you need to go? Or just ask someone to help you without knowing Russian language?

The Russian word 'PAZHALUSTA / ПОЖАЛУЙСТА' (please) is difficult enough to pronounce, so there is no problem if you just say 'PAMAGITE MNE / ПОМОГИТЕ МНЕ' (help me).

If you loudly shout one word 'PAMAGITE ! / ПОМОГИТЕ !' (help!), then those around you will understand that you need the police or an ambulance.
