LEARN RUSSIAN & VISIT RUSSIA

Online phrasebook & helper for travelers

Welcome to Russia

INTRODUCTION

#OnlinePhrasebook #LearnRussian #VisitRussia

DEAR FRIENDS !

People in Russia are open and hospitable. And in most cases you will get answers on questions, directions, explanations and other help. But there is a small problem - you do not know the Russian language, and not all Russians understand at least the English. What to do?

To get advice it is really better to ask young guys and girls. More chances, that some know English and can help. But it is even better to learn a few phrases and expressions in Russian. It's much easier than it seems!

Take the first step! You will find that someone will probably meet you half way! So, how to say, ask or understand something correctly in Russian, if you don`t know a single word in Russian? There is an exit!
If you are lost in the town. How to ask in Russian 'Where is something'? Signboards and direction signs. Vocabulary and phrasebook for travelers.
First of all, we have collected everything necessary for a traveler who needs help and translated all this in Russian. Just like in any other country, start with phrase
'Hello, help me' and then ask your question.

And then understand what they answered. And if you saw some kind of sign or do not understand what is written on the direction sign, then check it here. It is so simple!

Pay attention to the rules of pronunciation. Transliteration is given for the classical Latin alphabet and does not match with the rules of orthography and pronunciation of English. Besides, in Russian, as in many other languages, words are pronounced differently than they are spelled. For example, the French PEUGEOT is actually pronounced as PEZHO. And Russian Moscow (in Russian - Москва / Moskva) is actually pronounced as MAskva. Dashes below indicate stress (accent) a certain syllable in a word.

Our transliterated text does not always match the correct spelling, but it always matches the correct pronunciation! If you doubt the correct pronunciation, click on this link:

You will be presented with a short slide show with the correct pronunciation from a native speaker, and in some cases, even a small fragment from a film

Hello ! (formal)
[ ZDRASTVUITE ! ]

ЗДРАВСТВУЙТЕ !

A formal greeting to any stranger (eg to policemen, cashier, and just to any person on the street), or to person you know who deserves respect (eg your boss). You can also use it when talking to a group of people because the word 'ZDRAVSTVUITE / ЗДРАВСТВУЙТЕ' can refer to one or more people.

Good morning / Good afternoon / Good evening!
Typical greetings at specific times of the day, replacing the word Hello! Note! In Russian, the 'Good Morning / DOBRAYE UTRA' greeting is universal, suitable for both friends and family and for strangers, incl VIP persons.

But the greetings 'Good afternoon / DOBRYI DEN' and 'Good evening / DOBRYI VECHER' are a 100% official messages, emphasizing respect for a person, these expressions are not used in informal communication.

PAY ATTENTION! In fact, these are two expressions that are almost identical in meaning. It is not a mistake to use them in any situation incl vice versa. Depending on the context, this can be either an expression asking for forgiveness or a form of polite address before a question or a request to do something.

For example:

Sorry (Excuse me) for interrupting
[ PRASTITE (IZVINITE) SHTO PEREBIVAYU ]

ПРОСТИТЕ (ИЗВИНИТЕ) ЧТО ПЕРЕБИВАЮ

Sorry (Excuse me), could you help me?

A universal phrase is asking for help. Say this to any person, both staff at any store and just a passer-by on the street.

The Russian word 'PAZHALUSTA / ПОЖАЛУЙСТА' (please) is difficult enough to pronounce, so there is no problem if you just say 'PAMAGITE MNE / ПОМОГИТЕ МНЕ' (help me).

If you loudly shout one word 'PAMAGITE ! / ПОМОГИТЕ !' (help!), then those around you will understand that you need the police or an ambulance.

The Russian word 'ПОЖАЛУЙСТА' is used both in the phrases expressing a request (in this case it corresponds to the English word PLEASE - for example HELP PLEASE / ПОМОГИТЕ ПОЖАЛУЙСТА), and as an answer to the expression of gratitude (in this situation it corresponds to the English YOU ARE WELCOME - Thank you very much! - You`re welcome! / - Большое спасибо! - Пожалуйста!).

Also, do not forget that the English expressions WELCOME (expression of hospitality) and YOU`RE WELCOME (response to gratitude) are completely different when translated into Russian. Namely:

YOU`RE WELCOME - ПОЖАЛУЙСТА - PAZAHALUSTA

VERY IMPORTANT! In Russia, you can pay for purchases in Russian rubles only! Any carriers and sellers never accept CASH in dollars, euro, etc. If you`re asked to pay in $/€/£ etс, beware, this is a fraud!
Payments by card is widely available in Russia. It`s the most economic and safe method - your bank will convert the payment into rubles according to the internal rate. We advise you to take for the trip Visa, MasterCard or UnionPay in any currency, incl synchronized devices. They are accepted almost everywhere.

However, some shops, cafe, taxi or public transport (especially in small provincial towns), sometimes do not accept card payments. So it`s better to always have a little cash. Find out if a seller accepts cards before purchase or to placing your order.

WARNING!!! Never accept the offer of street traders to exchange your money! Learn more about cash, cards, exchange here:

IMPORTANT! In large Russian cities, in areas with block buildings, what is called the 'UPTOWN' in English (locals call these outskirts as SLEEPING AREA / СПАЛЬНЫЙ РАЙОН / SPALNYI RAYON), several house numbers can be the same. In this case, the address of such a house will contain the number of the block (building) or a letter (e.g. Central Square 1A).

An additional block in Russian is called as KORPUS / КОРПУС or STROENIE / СТРОЕНИЕ. For example, it might look like:

Central street, (house) 12, building 2

In Russian, option 1
TSENTRALNAYA ULITSA, (DOM) 12, KORPUS 2
ЦЕНТРАЛЬНАЯ УЛИЦА, (ДОМ) 12, КОРПУС 2
or
In Russian, option 2
TSENTRALNAYA ULITSA, (DOM) 12, STROENIE 2
ЦЕНТРАЛЬНАЯ УЛИЦА, (ДОМ) 12, СТРОЕНИЕ 2

So, in order to ask where this house is located, you must say in Russian so:
Where is house number 12, building number 2?

If you stress the second syllable (замОк), the meaning of the word will change completely and will mean 'DOOR LOCK'. Make no mistake!

YOUR QUESTIONS & OUR ANSWERS
DEAR FRIENDS !

What to do if you are lost in a big city or just need help. It is no secret that Russians do not always understand even English. Therefore, we have tried to collect not only the most popular questions for any traveler in any country, but also the answers to them. After all, it is equally important to understand what they answered you.

In addition, we will translate and show you the most common signboards and direction signs in Russian that you are likely to see on the street, at the airport or train station, as well as in shopping centers.

However, maybe we forgot something. Please help yourself and us - ask your question. This can be done not only in English - write in any language. We will definitely answer you!
