Dear friends! Tsarskoe Selo is not only the Catherine Palace and the Amber Room. Although, being an honest guide, one cannot fail to say that most tourists come to Pushkin town precisely for the sake of these attractions.

But the locals, like the members of the royal families several centuries ago, most of all like to leisurely walk through the wonderful landscaped parks, where beautiful pavilions, antique statues and other works of art lurk between canals and ponds!
Tsarskoe Selo, a country royal residence, is one of the main sights of imperial Saint Petersburg. The world-famous Catherine and Alexander Palaces, the parks of the same name, the Golden Gallery and the Amber Room make up a magnificent architectural and landscape ensemble built in the 18-19 centuries.
A must to visit!
Unlike Peterhof, where the priority is not interior decoration, but outdoor wandering, Tsarskoe Selo museums are the case when, first of all, you need to go inside, and at any time of the year. Although giving priority only to excursions without walks around the neighborhood would also be the wrong decision.

By the way, the locals of St. Petersburg call the Catherine Palace a small Hermitage - outwardly they really look alike. And our personal recommendation to you is not to go to inside the real Hermitage on Palace Square in St Petersburg, but to admire it only from the outside. The fact is that the Winter Palace is more of an "exhibition space" for something else, but in Pushkin town you will admire, first of all, the palace itself. A bit unexpected, but here's things to think about

And now about the most important! The best pictures in albums and enjoyment of memories are the two main things that you bring back from your trip, and also our main mission! Don't waste time looking for the best angle. We show you only top spots with absolutely exact coordinates!
This saves a lot of time - after all, the place for a good shot most often does not coincide with the location of the attraction itself! What this mean
Cheap flights to Russia and St Petersburg
Cheap taxi from airport Saint Petersburg Pulkovo LED to Tsarskoe Selo Catherine Palace Pushkin
Let`s fly to St Petersburg!
Attention! Select the payment currency/country other than the Russian Ruble/Russia - most likely you will not be able to pay for the ticket, especially for Russia domestic routes, with a non-Russian credit card! In 99% of cases, you will be redirected to the websites of travel agents making cross-border payments with Russia in the national currencies of their countries. Use only this form for each new search! Due to sanctions, almost all other search engines/airline companies do not show flights to or inside Russia.
TIPS FOR VISITORS & SELFIE MAKERS

✅ Planning. When not to come. The parks are open for visitors daily and all year round. But, pay attention, the Catherine Palace and most other museums there are days off and so-called 'sanitary days'. Access will be closed on any Tuesday (except for park entrances). The last Monday of the month from November to April is a 'sanitary day'. Museums are closed for cleaning.

Also, the doors of the palaces are locked on December 31st and January 1st. Besides, sometimes unplanned events are held on the territory of parks and palaces. (for example, historical movies are often made here). So, before planning anything, just in case, check out the current opening hours on a particular day.

✅ Admission & Timing. Many visitors, including large groups of tourists on buses, arrive in the city of Pushkin around noon or a little later. If you have not yet bought a ticket and are going to do it at the box office at the entrance, then a visit at this time, especially in the summer season, is the wrong decision.

A ticket bought in advance is a solution to the problem. However, if you are not a fan of large crowds, then, even in this case, it is better to come there early or later. The difference of the work hours of parks and palaces gives you many options. For example:

a) Come early in the morning to the opening of the parks, walk there, and only then, when the expositions and museums are open, go to the Catherine Palace. But the best option, to our mind, is to come later.

b) In this case, let's start with a tour to the Catherine Palace on fresh, not 'buzzing' legs. This takes about an hour. Well, add the Palace Chapel to the package too. All together - about one hour and a half. Further, no longer in a hurry, we go to walk along the alleys. Simple math suggests that entry timr through the turnstiles must be ordered no earlier than 15:30.

OPENING AND CLOSING HOURS. Entrances to the parks always open from 7 AM and, depending on the season, close at 9, 10 or 11 PM. So, neither photographers nor just walking people should absolutely have problems with lack of time.

Museums and various expositions are usually open from 10:00 am until 18:00. But in fact, access closes an hour earlier or a little more. That is, it is technically impossible to purchase any tickets (except for entry to the Catherine Park) for a time later than 16:45.

And once again we remind you of the need to check the current schedule for a particular day.
✅ I was here! The two most important things you bring home from a trip are memories and photos. How and where to get a little more much more than other travelers? Use our guide map! We have marked absolutely all sights with an accuracy of one meter/foot. Take a look at real photos you will get for memory. Click to zoom.
NOTE. It is forbidden to use selfie sticks, as well as professional photographic equipment (flashlights, tripods) in many rooms of the 'Tsarskoe Selo' Museum-Reserve.

The territory of parks and museums is huge, do not waste time in vain. Choose only what you need! More info

✅ Clothing, food, accessories. St. Petersburg, as well as its suburbs, do not have a stable comfortable climate, so in order to 'correspond to the weather', it will be useful to check the forecast. If you plan to walk in the parks, then wear comfortable shoes without heels and put a couple of sandwiches and a bottle of water in a bag. This is not necessary if you are going to confine yourself to visiting only the Catherine Palace. There are a lot of cafes and restaurants in the area from fast food to national cuisine.

✅ More things to do. There are two world-famous sights in St. Petersburg, which are located in the suburbs. These are Tsarskoe Selo and Fountains in Peterhof. Some tourists make the big mistake of trying to visit both of these places on the same day. Do not do that!

Firstly, the transport connection between Peterhof and Pushkin is not optimal and you will spend a lot of time on the road. Secondly, it's like if you dine in one of the cool restaurants, you immediately go to dinner in another.

Plan your visit to Peterhof and Pushkin into two days. But what to do if you don't have much time? Choose something one. What exactly? It`s easy! Check the forecast If the weather is optimal for walking in the fresh air, in summer and in general when the fountains are on, definitely choose Peterhof. If it is raining and windy outside, go inside, that is, come to the city of Pushkin.

There are many other attractions besides the palaces. Even train stations are sights! After all, this is the very first railway in Russia and its oldest stations. Must to see! Therefore the next chapter is..

✅ Transportation & Accommodation. As we have already said, the commuter train from 'Vitebskiy Vokzal' train station in St Petersburg is our special recommendation. However, read also about all the ways to get to Tsarskoe Selo, as well as VERY useful tips

Walks and excursions around Pushkin town are breathtaking, but also a little tiring. If you like 'city break' style travels and you came to our town without huge bags and suitcases, why do you need to return right away to St Petersburg right away after excursion to Tsarskoe Selo?

Become a local for one night in a very cozy semi-provincial town! Or do so. Come in the evening, spend the night in a hotel, and in the morning go to see the Amber Room. There are many excellent hotels and apartments in Pushkin!

And, maybe, do you want to live right in the Catherine Palace itself? We do not lie, there is such an option! Tempting? Well..

  • Dear Travelers!
Due to the sanctions imposed against Russia, most well-known reservation services, including Booking and Airbnb, temporarily do not provide accommodation options in Russia. Therefore, we have replaced them with the best similar Russian services. Read more
Your adventures in the city of Pushkin will always be amazing, but still a little tiring. It's great when a cozy bed awaits you 5 minutes from the attractions. Moreover, it is not always expensive.
If you are a fan of pushing buttons and choosing options on your own, then right now get a search form

In the meantime, we will tell you that Pushkin town has always been considered an elite place and housing here has always been valued. Apparently this is why there are no hostels in Tsarskoe Selo. But there are many good apartments. Well, hotels, of course, too. Here is Pushkinskaya Usadyba (Pushkin's Estate) for quite inexpensively. There are also many middle options in terms of price and quality, like Milena Hotel

Well, if you want a premium class, then we recommend Tsar Palace Luxury Hotel with almost exclusively suites rooms. A bit expensive, but the price already includes a SPA with a pool, steam baths, a salt sauna, a snow fountain, a chic breakfast buffet and a gym if you go overboard with sweets. All this is here

A special option is accommodation directly at the Catherine Palace. Hotel Ekaterina belongs to the museum and rooms can only be booked by writing an email to hotelekaterina@tzar.ru
The advantages, apart from the unique location, are an honest 'three stars', a good breakfast included in the price and parking on the territory of the palace.

The official website of Ekaterina Hotel with current price lists and accommodation conditions can be found here
You can also read the description and reviews on the Booking.com website. However, please note, currently not possible to make a reservation in Russia through Booking.com

The architectural and park ensemble in Tsarskoe Selo is truly magnificent. You will get an unforgettable experience, admiring both the elegance of the architecture outside and the decoration inside.

And one more little tip. Insert a high capacity memory card into your gadget or take a spare one with you. It's also a good idea to have a power bank in your bag. You will have so many reasons to press the button of your smartphone or camera, which is why very often the battery or free space on the stick ends faster than your tour.

Even just going around the perimeter around the Catherine Palace will take time, and the territory of the parks is simply huge. Therefore, so that you do not run back-and-forth in vain, we will show you where to get the main 'postcard' pictures. You will have shots from the best angles, not always obvious! Main facade of Catherine Palace viewed from the Hermitage Alley, as well as from the Parade Ground, the northern wing with the Palace Church viewed from Ekaterininsky Park and outside it, for example, from Lyceum Lane. Everything is exactly as in these images. And, of course, not only this, but much more!
Click links/photos to see the coordinates of the shooting location
Dear friends! Just in case, we repeat that this chapter is about finding the best angles. Do not worry! Where to buy tickets or how to get to Pushkin, we will tell below. And we have already told all the main advices for visiting above.

Unlike many other places in St Petersburg, where a couple of images for memory are enough, in the city of Pushkin there are at least several dozen such points. Tourists usually walk here for at least 2-3 hours.. Maybe, we can help save time, if you want to see the sights of interest only to you, and skip something. Therefore, we have created a guide map for you with the exact coordinates of absolutely all landmarks.

So, here are the shooting points for almost all 'postcard pictures'.

all shotpoints
More than half of the places that we have indicated on our your map are not in ordinary guidebooks - and this is your advantage. In addition, you will learn about the sights located outside the parks around the Catherine Palace, that is, directly in the city of Pushkin.

Here are some ideas for good shots and, in our opinion, in some cases, even mandatory ones!

Egyptian Gate
Cathedral of St Catherine
Monument to Empress Catherine II
Monument to poet Alexander Pushkin

And we want to draw your attention to the object, at first glance, not directly related to palaces and monuments. If you go to Pushkin town by commuter train, be sure to add 20-30 minutes to your travel plan for a short tour of Vitebskiy Vokzal train station
Built in 1837, originally called 'Tsarskoselskiy', is the oldest station, and the line to Tsarskoye Selo is the very first railway in Russia. And believe, there is something to see here!

Well, let's go for a walk! Just in case, here are a few shots you can't miss. Click on the pictures to enlarge them and read a detailed description with the exact coordinates of the places.
For a complete list of attractions, please follow this link
Dear travelers! Our main task is to show you all the great places and excellent angles, of which, in fact, there are hundreds and thousands! We have marked almost all of them on the map, so that you can choose what you like and create your own route.
By the way, we present an unusual travel concept 'don't go inside, stay outside'
This means that we talk more about walking the streets and almost nothing about visiting exhibitions, museums, and generally any buildings. But there are exceptions to every rule, and today is a special case when you should definitely look inside!

But still, Tsarskoe Selo is not only the Amber Room, painting galleries and other works of art. The landscapes and architecture of the Catherine and Alexander parks are so good that there will be no bad shots. Your camera will be grateful to you at any time of the year - for the beautiful summer and autumn alleys. And for the palaces in the snow (all links - panoramic photos).

Before planning a visit and buying any tickets, be sure to check the current schedule for a particular day. In addition to days for cleening (last Monday of the month from November to April) and just days off (every Tuesday), and also on December 31 and January 1, there are various unplanned events. For example, historical movies are often made here. When and at what time it is better to come or not to come, we told in detail here

One more important thing. To get to the Catherine PALACE and somewhere else, you first need to get to the Catherine PARK (access to Alexander Park is free at any time). When buying a ticket to the palace, you, by default, also pay for the entrance to the park. But a ticket to the park does not give access rights to any palaces, pavilions and museums. Any additional pass must be purchased separately.

A regular tour to the Catherine Palace lasts about an hour and is available in two different options:
Route 1 and Route 2. All the most significant attractions such as the Great Hall and the Amber Room are included in both itineraries.
You can get acquainted with the exposition of the Catherine Palace on your own or with audio guide in English, French, German, Italian, Chinese (small fee + deposit ₽ 1 000 - refundable after the tour).

The access of visitors to museums is strictly limited. That is, tickets are sold for sessions, and their number cannot exceed the established limit.
Note! For the current date, tickets can only be purchased directly at the ticket office and only those that have remained unsold on the Internet. Therefore, to save time and nerves, we advise you to buy tickets online in advance. This is possible up to 7 days before the date of the intended visit.

However, we know a way to buy a ticket for the current date and for any date in general. Even if absolutely all tickets have been sold - this happens sometimes. Yes, it will be more expensive than the normal cost, but with a guarantee and absolutely legal. And for this money you will be taken to the place and back, and they will even give you a guided tour! Well, life hack is here

And now check the cost of tickets and buy them on the official website.
Read terms under the green buttons.
Unfortunately, the English language booking page is currently unavailable. Tickets can only be purchased on the Russian version of the official website. It is not difficult, as the interface is intuitive. However, to correctly select the category of tickets, use Google Translate

Just copy and paste words and phrases into 'RUSSIAN' window and you will get a text in English or other language. Please don't forget that machine translation is not always absolutely correct.
NOTE! Due to sanctions, most cards of international payment systems are not valid in Russia.

GOOD TO KNOW !

Free admission is provided for children under 14 (any citizenship, any day).
* On the 3-rd Sunday of the month, admission is free for all persons under 18 years of age.

Choose tickets for foreigners! The fact is that the base fare for foreign citizens (adults) is approximately 160% of the ticket price for residents of Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Reduced fare (eg for students) is 50% of the base rate.
All tickets are personalized. Be prepared to show ID confirming your identity, citizenship and the right to a benefit (for example ISIC member card). Otherwise, you will not be allowed into Catherine Palace or other museums and the money will not be refunded.

In the package of e-tickets, there must be at least one paid one (incl with a discount). Issuing only free tickets is technically impossible. Payment must be provide no later than 30 minutes after the start of purchase procedure. An unpaid order will be automatically cancelled.

Entrance to museums is carried out strictly at the time indicated on the ticket and stops 10 minutes after the start of the paid session.
It is necessary to present (scan) a barcode on paper or from the screen of a mobile device.

tours & excursions

The museum is very popular - all year-round there are a lot of individual tourists and groups. Therefore, we strongly recommend to buy tickets online in advance. Tickets go on sale (are added to official website) 7 days in advance. They are very quickly bought up during the extra high season (June - August). But...

HOW TO BUY A TICKETS AND AVOID THE LINE IF ALL E-TICKETS ARE SOLD

including the current date, that is, today. Let's remember that access to the Catherine Palace and other museums in Tsarskoye Selo is limited. Only a certain number of tickets go on sale, which cannot be exceeded. First, in the period from 1 to 7 days before the date of the visit, tickets go on sale online on official website. And next, everything that was not sold on the Internet can be purchased at the ticket offices of the palace, directly on the day of the visit.

However, having stood in line, you suddenly find that there are no passes left for the right time. Or even in general. In a word - a lottery. That is why we again and again recommend buying tickets in advance. But, it happens that even two or three days before the scheduled date, tickets for some sessions run out. What to do?

There is a very good life hack! Buy a bus tour! It's simple - travel companies have a ticket quota that belongs only to them. Important note! On the Internet, you can buy a tour for almost any date, even more than seven days in advance, but not for today. If you find yourself in just such a situation - do not despair!

Read the instructions how to buy a tour to Catherine Palace today, here and now

Of course, the cost of the tour will be more expensive than buying just a ticket. But, if there are no tickets, and you want to get to the Catherine Palace, incl current day, you can overpay a little. And for this overpayment you will receive a very large bonus. You will be taken back and forth directly from the heart of St. Petersburg. And on the way, as well as inside the Catherine Palace, you will be told a lot of interesting things, though .. only in Russian =)
Parade square of Catherine Palace. Golden Gate.
But why explore the museum with a Russian-speaking group? Don't worry, it`s not obligatory. You have the choice to be with the group all time or use only transportation and fast access. Just inform your guide of your intentions. Show him (her) these phrases in Russian. Of course, those that suit your plans.

we want to explore the palace on our own, so after entering we will leave the group

ВО СКОЛЬКО НАМ НУЖНО ВЕРНУТЬСЯ К АВТОБУСУ?
when should we go back to the bus?

МЫ НЕ ПОЕДЕМ ОБРАТНО В ПЕТЕРБУРГ НА АВТОБУСЕ, НЕ ЖДИТЕ НАС
we are not going back to St Petersburg by bus, don't wait for us

The main advantage of inexpensive bus tours is the availability of almost any date. This is a real find for those who forgot to buy tickets in advance and does not want to spend half a day in the queue.

Advance booking is a good idea. It is better to have tickets already in your pocket when you do not have much time. But, if you did not have time or forgot to do it, then you still have one chance. Moreover, this is practically the only way to get tickets to Catherine Palace today for today without standing in line at the box office.

So.. First, don't buy anything from barkers on the streets, who have nothing in their inventory other than a folding table and a megaphone. In St. Petersburg, there are two main sales outlets for excursions. You have to go there, especially since the departure of buses on various tourist routes takes place there.
SALE POINT no 1. Intersection of Nevsky Prospekt and Perinnaya Line (Dumskaya street), at the exit from the metro station 'Nevsky Prospekt'
SALE POINT no 2. Main entrance into 'Moskovskiy Vokzal' train station from Ploshchad Vosstaniya square.

Be an early bird! The first departures start at 8 AM. But if you come after 12:00 , then, most likely, you will already get.. nothing.

Note. No matter, if you will buy tickets now or later, directly at the sale point, we ask you to follow some rules. For your safety and maximum pleasure

Our recommendation is to use commuter train option. Although the station in Pushkin is located at some distance from the Catherine Palace, this method is not subject to traffic jams, which happens quite often on the car roads to the city of Pushkin. There are other advantages - we advise you to learn below.
The most popular and economical way to get to the palaces and parks of Tsarskoe Selo. As well the fastest. Among the advantages of this method is a small subway tour. The subway of St Petersburg is considered one of the most beautiful in the world!

Another important bonus. If you choose Pushkinskaya or Zvenigorodskaya subway stations as a point of transfer from the underground to the commuter train, then you will see Vitebskiy Train Station, formerly known as St Petersburg-Tsarskoselsky station. IMPORTANT! Trains of different categories run in the same direction, for example 'Standard' and 'Comfort'. Tickets for 'regular' trains are not suitable for travel in more expensive ones (the reverse option is possible). Be careful before buying a ticket. Back to the choice of mode of transport
One of the cheapest and most popular ways to get to Tsarskoe Selo. Be sure to remember guided bus tours. In our opinion, this is not the best way for the true traveler. We recommend that you give preference to a personal visit or as part of a mini-group. But, sometimes, this is a super life hack to buy a ticket to the Catherine Palace when all tickets are sold out, including for the current date.

Well, below we will tell you how to get to Catherine Palace using public transport. The undoubted advantage of this method is that in Pushkin bus stops are located very close to the main entrance to the park and the palace. No additional transfers or a half-hour walk on foot will be required.

The big drawback is that traffic jams quite often occur on the highway to Pushkin town. Therefore, in addition to a guaranteed hour-long one-way trip, be mentally prepared to stand sometimes as much in a traffic jam. Of course, 90 percent out of 100 everything will be fine. But just in case, we warned you.

Little tip. If your hotel is not near 'Moskovskaya' or 'Zvyozdnaya', choose the subway station 'Kupchino' as a transfer point from the underground to the bus.

Firstly, it is closest to Tsarskoe Selo. Secondly, if there are traffic jams on the road (we highly recommend checking it by Yandex Traffic Viewer when leaving the metro), then you will have a chance to change your plan in favor of the train or taxi (the car may try to avoid lines, the bus cannot).

Click the station name or clock to get detailed information about the particular underground stop
Just in case, ask the driver (passengers) in Russian - DVARETS (the palace). Travel time on all routes from/to metro is about 1 hour or more, depending on traffic.
Please note! Access to the metro stations in St Petersburg is open about from 05:40 till ..
a) about 00:30 - for stations in city center
b) till midnight - for stations in other parts of the city
Click the station icon/name to get the schedule

Change of lines is possible only until 00:15
Create your ride route on an interactive metro map (enter or click the name of the departure and destination stations)

Taxi is a great way to travel to and from Catherine Palace in Tsarskoe Selo. If you follow the safety rules and our recommendations, it will be easy and absolutely inexpensive. But keep in mind that in the daytime in St. Petersburg there can be very heavy traffic. Therefore, if possible, we recommend that you first use the metro and get to the KUPCHINO (end station of Line M2) and take a taxi from there.
The most economical combined way is 'Subway + Commuter train + Taxi'

There are two ways to get a car. Request a regular taxi or order a private transfer

All you need to know about Taxi in Russia
YandexGo (or YandexTaxi) is the largest and most well-known aggregator of licensed taxi carriers in Russia and in the countries of the former USSR. So, even if you place an order in the YandexGO application, it is likely that you will get a car with the logo of another carrier or even an unbranded car. This is a normal situation.

In 2018, Yandex and the Russian division of Uber created a joint company and combined the software on one platform. That is why ordering a taxi in Russia will seem so simple, familiar and understandable to you!

In our travel guide, for any transport terminal or landmarks of each city, in addition to instructions on how to get there by public transport, we will provide a link to the YandexGo
By clicking these buttons, your device will open the application immediately (if installed), indicating the desired point as the destination or departure of your choice.

Don`t forget to allow an app or website to track your location to quickly find pick-up point. Change the origin or destination if necessary. If you want to specify a location on the map, move the map, but not the location icon.

For your convenience, we have also created links to ready-made routes from Catherine Palace to transport hubs (incl subway and train stations) that are used by the vast majority of tourists.

VERY IMPORTANT! When ordering a taxi yourself, in one way or another, be sure to specify that your address of origin or destination is located in Pushkin town! The fact is that some streets have the same names, both in St. Petersburg and in its suburbs! Make no mistake!

Local taxi drivers more often do not accept bank cards for payment - please, prepare cash in advance.

How else to order a ride from the airport, train station or to tourist attraction without knowing Russian? Simply book a private transfer!

The advantages of this type of transportation are - no stress and no problems with language, price is known in advance. And believe or check out - it's not expensive at all! The car will be waiting for you in the right place at the right time. If necessary, your personal driver will be expecting you, holding a banner with your name.

You can book a ride with any service level - incl luxury car, transfer for the family with children or economy minivan for a tourist group for full day . The cost is fixed at the time of pre-order and never rises - either when the driver is waiting for the passenger, when the stop is necessary, or because of traffic jams.

Our choice and recommendation is i`WAY. This is one of the best companies in Russia, providing shuttle services. By the way, reservation a ride with i`WAY is available in almost any country. Remember this on your next trip!
This is an honest guide. Therefore, we do not recommend this service if your place of accommodation (or just pick-up point) is not too far from the attraction you are going to visit. In this case, it is much more better to order a regular taxi. But but if the distance is large, for example, departure point is airport or one of the suburbs(!), then a private transfer is really a convenient and profitable option.

So, if you need a reliable and inexpensive transfer from your hotel or any other location to Tsarskoe Selo (Pushkin town) and back, then why not book this service right now? Check the cost - it is not expensive at all and often does not exceed the price of a regular taxicab!

The booking process is very simple! Coverage is not limited to airports, hotels and famous locations. The route is built in the Google Maps engine, wherever there are roads with street names and house numbers.
You can specify the name of a hotel or street in any language, with or without typos! Try it now!
Just in case, we indicate several most popular locations in St. Petersburg. Just copy and paste what you need into the booking form:

  • Catherine Palace Pushkin
  • Hermitage Palace Square
  • Peterhof, Razvodnaya 9 (fountains)
  • Pulkovo Airport LED
  • Railway Station Moskovskiy

NOTE. Make no mistake! If you order a shuttle FROM Pushkin (Catherine Palace) by entering the address LEONT`YEVSKAYA, 2, your driver will be waiting for you at this place
